Cypress Loses Steam in Hopes for an Upset

Chargers falter in second half to lose to #1 Mt. Sac.

Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. – The two state champions from the past two years faced off Friday at the Chaffey Crossover and the more recent champ prevailed as the 2005 champion Chargers lost to Mt. Sac 69-85. The unranked Chargers came out battling hoping to upset the number one ranked Mounties but could not pull out a consistent second half in the sixteen point loss. Sophomore point guard Corianne Felix paced Cypress with 13 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

Cypress came out shocking the heavily favored Mounties scoring the first basket for the 2-0 lead. The Mounties bounced right back taking a six point lead. Cypress hung in there and kept battling back tying the game three times and then taking the one point lead with a free-throw by Felix to end the half in Cypress’s favor 40-39.

The Chargers could not maintain the momentum going into the second half letting Mt. Sac go on a 6-0 run and could not score until almost four minutes into the half. The Mounties went on another six point run and continued to pull away and out of reach. Cypress was out-rebounded by nine and outscored 8-20 on second chance baskets. Charger sophomore Brae Butler led Cypress in scoring with 14 points going 8 for 8 from the stripe adding 3 steals. Freshman forward Saw-Ann Bryan chipped in 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Freshman guard Yanet Enriquez was 5 for 9 from the field for 11 points adding 4 steals. Sophomore forward Brandi Thomas pitched in 8 points while grabbing 6 boards.

The Chargers fall to 0-4 on the season, the worst start Cypress has had since 1999. Cypress continues with the crossover playing Citrus College hoping to pick up their first win of the season. The teams face of Saturday at 5:00 pm at Chaffey College.
