Cypress Can’t Keep Pace in Loss to Canyons

Thomas scored a career high 25 points.
Charger comeback attempts cut short.

Santa Clarita, Calif. – Cypress faced the high powered offense of Canyons Sunday and could not keep pace despite two Chargers scoring in the twenties. The Cougars scored 84 points off Cypress while the Chargers could score just 71 in the thirteen point loss. Sophomore forward Brandi Thomas broke her previous career high set just two nights before with a 25 point performance while grabbing 10 rebounds for her second double-double this season.

Cypress began the Canyons game by grabbing the early lead. Cypress could not hold on as Canyons some adjustments and started scoring on the run. Cypress ended the first half down ten 35-45. Cypress mustered an eight point run in the second half cutting the lead to four but proceeded to give up six points straight to nix their comeback run. Cypress could just keep pace from there not able to generate another threatening run and losing by thirteen.

Sophomore guard Brae Butler scored a season high 23 points with 2 blocked shots and 3 steals. Thomas and Butler’s twenty plus point performances accounted for most of the scoring as they were the only Chargers in double digits. Sophomore guard Corianne Felix turned it on in the second half and finished the day with 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists.

The Chargers fall to 5-7 this season heading into a big challenge Wednesday. The Chargers will face the second ranked Pasadena Lancers. Pasadena knocked Cypress out of the playoffs last season in the second round. Pasadena is hot this year at 15-0 coming off of a 93-44 blowout of Rio Hondo outscoring opponents by an average of 20 points a game. The Chargers will try to pull off a holiday upset Wednesday at Pasadena at 7:00 pm.
