Chargers Fade in Efforts for an Upset

Pasadena, Calif. – Cypress continued their difficult schedule Wednesday traveling to rival Pasadena to face off with the undefeated number two team in Southern California. Cypress beat Pasadena in 2005 for the State Championship, and Pasadena beat Cypress last season to knock the Chargers out of the playoffs. This year, Pasadena kept the upper hand and Cypress could not keep pace in the second half to lose 71-93. Sophomore guard Corianne Felix contributed all around handing out 5 assists, 5 points, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds.

Cypress was down early slipping behind by 13 points after just seven minutes of play. Cypress mounted a quick comeback topped off by a three-point basket by sophomore guard Yanet Enriquez with 2:08 left in the half to give Cypress the lead 29-27. Cypress held the lead till the end of the half when the Lancers went on a 6-1 run to finish the half with a three point lead 35-32. Cypress came out in the second half flat defensively. Pasadena jumped out to a 17 point lead in the second half after five minutes of play which Cypress could not recover from eventually losing by 22.

Sophomore guard Brae Butler scored 11 points while grabbing 6 rebounds to pace Cypress. Sophomore forward Brandi Thomas scored a team high 12 points in just fourteen minutes on the floor limited by foul trouble. Freshman forward Saw-Ann Bryan was the third Charger in double digits going 4 for 5 from the field for 10 points.

Cypress takes a week off for the holidays before driving North for the annual De Anza tournament. Cypress starts the tournament with Solano. Solano is 7-10 coming off of a 47-66 loss to Santa Rosa. Cypress placed second last year at the same tournament. The action starts next Thursday at 4:00 pm at De Anza.
