Overtime Efforts Fall Two Points Short for Cypress

Cypress lets 14 point lead slip away in overtime loss.

Cupertino, Calif. – The Chargers headed North again to compete in the annual Mike Gervasoni Memorial Classic. After a long ride up, Cypress faced Solano and gave up a big first half lead to and ended the game in a heartbreaking 70-72 overtime loss. Sophomore guard Brae Butler notched her fourth double-double this season scoring a team high 17 points and 11 rebounds while grabbing 5 steals.

Cypress started strong and inched their way into an early 14 point lead. Foul trouble let Solano chip away and close on the lead to end the half at 33-31 in Cypress’s favor. The second half became a back and forth battle of runs capped off by a lay-up by freshman forward Saw-Ann Bryan to tie the game at 61 to cap off regulation play. The same pace continued in the overtime with a back and forth scoring battle. Solano was able to pull off just their second three-pointer of the game to put the nail in the coffin as Cypress came up just two points short at the buzzer.

Sophomore guard Corianne Felix continued with another strong performance playing 42 minutes for Cypress tying a career high 9 assists with 5 points and 3 steals. Bryan was the only freshman in double digits scoring 12 points in just thirteen minutes while grabbing 6 rebounds. Sophomore forward Brandi Thomas paced Cypress with 15 points and 7 rebounds.

The Chargers have proved to be a team of streaks losing their first four games of the season, winning the next five, and are currently on a five game slide to fall to 5-9. Cypress moves on to the consolation bracket tomorrow to face Cosumnes River. The Hawks are 8-11 coming off of a 56-85 loss to Ohlone. The teams face off at 2:00 pm tomorrow at De Anza College. The winner moves on to the consolation championship and the loser is eliminated.
