Costa Mesa, Calif. – The Chargers faced off with the highest powered offense in the state and third ranked team in Southern California Friday and came up short. Orange Coast is ranked first in average points per game at 86.2 and produced as advertised with 87 points to outscore Cypress’s 72. Sophomore guard Brae Butler scored in the twenties for the third time this season with 20 points and 5 rebounds to pace Cypress.
The Chargers started strong early grabbing as much as a five point lead to start the game. Orange Coast went on a six point run from there to take the lead for good at the 16:02 mark. Cypress was able to tie the game one more time before the Pirates went on an 11-0 run and ended the half with OCC up 47-33. Cypress put up a better fight in the second half only getting outscored by one, but every time the Chargers chipped away at the lead, OCC would score an easy bucket never letting Cypress gain momentum.
Sophomore forward Brandi Thomas led Cypress in scoring again with 25 points and 8 rebounds going 9 for 14 from the field. Sophomore floor leader Corianne Felix added 11 points 3 steals, and 6 rebounds. Freshmen Yanet Enriquez, Tonisha Phelps, and Saw-Ann Bryan combined for 14 points.
Cypress comes back home Wednesday for their third conference match-up. The Chargers host Golden West next. The Rustlers are 2-14 and 0-2 in conference coming off of a 50-98 loss to Santa Ana. The teams meet up Wednesday at Cypress at 7:00 pm.
