Comeback Campaign Cut Short in Bid for an Upset

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress’s sister school and rival Fullerton came to Cypress for what was to be another thrilling and competitive game on Friday. Cypress came from behind to tie the game before eventually having to foul for the eventual 61-69 loss to Fullerton. Sophomore guard Brae Butler reached her fifth double-double this season with 22 points and 12 rebounds in addition to 3 steals and 3 assists. This was the third straight twenty plus point game for Butler.
The favored Hornets came out stinging with an eight point lead after just six minutes of play. Cypress fought back but could only chip away to within four before Fullerton went on a 15-4 run to take the fifteen point lead eventually ending the half up ten 41-31. The Chargers went into the second half motivated going on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 43 at the 13:22 mark. Fullerton took the lead back but Cypress would not fall too far behind. A three-pointer by freshman guard Yanet Enriquez at the 2:21 mark tied the game at 60. Fullerton would follow with a made jumper to take the lead by two and Butler made one of two free-throws to cut the lead to one. Cypress could not score again as the Hornets scored another basket and the Chargers were forced to foul leading to the eventual eight point loss.
Freshman forward Saw-Ann Bryan showed promise scoring 12 points in just 14 minutes. Sophomore floor leader Corianne Felix had another all-around game with 4 assists, 3 steals, 5 points, and 4 rebounds. Michelle Babin and Enriquez combined for 12 points and 8 rebounds.
Cypress falls to 2-2 in conference in fourth place on a win, loss, win, loss pattern. Cypress hopes this pattern holds out for just one more game as they head to Irvine Valley next. IVC is 9-9 and 1-3 in conference coming off of a 49-73 loss to first place OCC. Cypress will travel to face the Lasers at Irvine Valley Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
