Overtime Heroics Pushes Cypress over .500 in Conference

Irvine, Calif. – It looked like a Cypress rerun when Cypress slowly gave up their second half lead and almost handed the game to Irvine Valley. After surviving regulation play, Cypress woke up again in overtime for the 70-59 win. Sophomore guard Marissa Bravo neared a triple-double hustling for 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and a career high 8 steals.

The Chargers took command in the first five minutes of the game taking an early commanding lead. The Lasers chipped away while Cypress faltered until IVC finally took the lead. Cypress was able to get ahead again to end the half but with a narrow 31-30 lead. The Chargers broke out early again in the second half gaining another commanding lead. IVC followed with the same efforts to chip away and eventually tie the game. The teams battled back and forth until an eventual 55-55 tie at the end of regulation. Cypress’s break out performances became an advantage in overtime when Cypress took advantage of a few steals, rebounds, and foul shots to hold IVC to just two baskets while scoring five field goals for the eventual eleven point win.

Sophomore guard Corianne Felix turned in a 16 point game to tie a career high in addition to tying a career high with 6 steals with 3 assists. Sophomore guard Brae Butler neared another double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Freshman forward Saw-Ann Bryan was the third Charger in double digits with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

The Chargers have a day before facing another challenge Friday. Cypress travels to up-and-coming Santa Ana to face the 14-7 Dons ranked seventh in Southern California. Cypress and Santa Ana are tied for third in conference at 3-2 and the Dons are coming off of a 60-70 loss to first place OCC. The teams face off Friday at 7:30 pm at Santa Ana.
