Rough Start for Cypress Leads to Tough Loss to the Dons

Santa Ana, Calif. – Cypress visited the site of their final victory last season that sealed the Orange Empire Championship hoping for the same type of success this time around. Cypress got off to a bad start and played catch up all game eventually losing 75-83. Sophomore guard Brae Butler took over for Cypress scoring a game high and career high 28 points in addition to 8 rebounds.
Cypress started the game flat missing their first twelve shots and turning the ball over seven times before scoring. Santa Ana started on a roll climbing to a commanding 20-0 lead after seven minutes of play. Butler turned it on from there scoring the Chargers’ first basket at the 12:40 mark. Butler then scored ten of Cypress’s first eleven points. Cypress began chipping away from there going on a 10-0 run at one point late in the first half and finishing the half down by just six, 38-32. Cypress was within reach after the first, but Santa Ana kept trying to pull away going on a 14-4 run to go up 16 early in the second half. Cypress had ground to make up again and would not quit chipping away until they got as close as five late in the game. Cypress was down just six with a minute left before having to foul and losing by eight to finish the game.
Sophomore guard Corianne Felix was Cypress’s second leading scorer with 11. Sophomore forward Brandi Thomas finished with 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Sophomore forward Michelle Babin went 4 for 7 from the field for 8 points and 5 rebounds. Sophomore guard Marissa Bravo also scored 8 with 7 rebounds.
Cypress has the weekend to reboot and prepare for their game against fourth place Saddleback. The Gauchos are tied with Cypress for fourth in conference at 3-3 and 14-6 overall. They are ranked 15th in Southern California coming off of a seven point loss to first place Orange Coast. The teams face off Wednesday night at Cypress at 7:30 pm.
