Chargers Hold on for another Win over Riverside

Riverside, Calif. – Cypress tipped off the second half of Orange Empire play against Riverside Friday. Cypress defeated the Tigers earlier this season and was able to duplicate the result with a 65-53 victory. Sophomore guard Brae Butler turned in a career high night with 30 points and made it a double-double with 10 rebounds.
The first half started as a back and forth battle with Cypress taking a big early lead 12-4 at the 17:19 mark. The Tigers chipped away but Cypress fought back for another eight point lead 20-12. Riverside came back with a 12-0 run to take a four point lead. Cypress took the reigns from there going on a 17-4 run capped off by a three-point bucket by Butler to close the half with a nine point lead. The Cypress momentum continued in the second half as the Chargers went up as much as 15 at the start of the half. The Tigers were not done though cutting the lead to eight with just 2:32 left. Cypress would not let go scoring the next four points finished off by a jumper by sophomore forward Michelle Babin for the twelve point win. Turnovers were key as Cypress took advantage outscoring Riverside 31-8 on points off of turnovers. Cypress turned the ball over just 12 times while Riverside turned it over 24 times.
Babin finished the game with a game high 4 assists and 4 points. Freshman forward Saw-Ann Bryan added 9 points and 6 rebounds on the night. Sophomores Brandi Thomas and Marissa Bravo combined for 14 points and 7 rebounds.
Cypress has the weekend off to prepare for first place Orange Coast. The Chargers lost to Orange Coast by 15 on January 5th. OCC is undefeated in conference and ranked fourth in Southern California coming off of a big 102-33 win over Golden West. The two face off again Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Cypress.
