Scores Reverse in Charger Loss to Merced

Merced, Calif. – After a first game loss, Cypress was relegated to the consolation bracket where they faced host Merced. The game was tight the whole way through with Cypress leading by eight at halftime before the Blue Devils stormed back to defeat the Chargers by eight, 61-53. Freshman guard Candyce Carlberg led the Chargers with 17 points and six rebounds.
The Chargers started the game out well never allowing a Merced lead in the first half. Cypress inched along until gaining the eight point lead 28-20 at halftime. Merced started to chip away as soon as the second half started tying it up after just a few minutes and then taking their first lead of the game with a free throw. From there, the Blue Devils held on to their lead slowly inching away from the Chargers. With Merced up three, the Chargers were forced to foul allowing five Merced free throws for the eventual eight point loss.
Sophomore forward Saw-Ann Bryan went five for eight from the field for twelve points on the night in addition to five rebounds. Freshman point guard Michelle Salemi followed with eleven points and five assists.
Cypress falls to 0-2 and is eliminated from the Merced tournament. They return home and prepare for a tough weekend ahead first facing defending state champions Mt. Sac and then Chaffey. Cypress will travel to Chaffey to face Mt. Sac first on Friday at 5:00 pm.
