Chargers Make a Statement in Third Place Win over Rio Hondo

Cypress, Calif. – After a disappointing loss Saturday night, Cypress was relegated to competing for third place in the Lady Charger Classic against Rio Hondo. The Chargers attacked first and quickly making a statement over the Roadrunners with an 88-65 win earning third. Freshman guard Sequana Norris led Cypress with 29 points going 4 for 8 from the three-point line while adding six assists and seven steals. Norris also led defensively holding Rio Hondo’s leading scorer to just five points.
Cypress jumped out early as freshman point guard Michelle Salemi led off the action with a three-point bucket. The Chargers then went on to take a 12-0 lead before Rio Hondo could score. Cypress continued the assault taking as much as a 28 point lead in the first half and 50-23 lead after a last second three-point bucket by Norris. Cypress slowed their pace in the second half but maintained a comfortable cushion between themselves and Rio for the eventual 23 point win. Cypress had a phenomenal shooting day from beyond the arc making 15 three-point baskets.
Salemi finished with a team high six three-point baskets going 6 for 8 for a total of 20 points on the night. Sophomore forward Letisha Batiste led Cypress on the boards with nine rebounds followed by sophomore forward Saw-Ann Bryan with eight.
Cypress improves to 6-2 and earns third place in the tournament. Norris earned an all-tournament selection with her performance throughout the weekend. Cypress has ten days off before going across town to Long Beach City to face the Vikings on Thursday December 13th at 6:00 pm at Long Beach.
