Cypress Never Looks Back in Win over Long Beach City

Long Beach, Calif. – After a long break after the Lady Charger Classic, Cypress continued competition Thursday night traveling across town to Long Beach City. The Chargers avenged their 2006 season opening loss to the Vikings with a thirteen point win 71-58. Freshman guard Michelle Salemi paced Cypress to the win with ten points and four rebounds.

Cypress jumped out to the lead early, relinquished it, and grabbed it back for good all in the first nine minutes of play. The Chargers inched ahead and held on to a slim lead throughout the first half despite shooting just 23.5% from the field ending the half 32-28. The Chargers improved their shooting in the second half taking as much as an 18 point lead. The Vikings would not give in closing to seven with just two minutes left before Salemi cut the comeback short answering with a pivotal three point bucket.

Freshman guard Sequana Norris led Cypress in scoring with 19 points, six steals, and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Chelsea Oldfield came off the bench to grab ten rebounds while freshman guard Kejera Jolly scored nine points along with six rebounds.

Cypress improves to 3-6 on the season and has a day off to prepare for their annual face-off with fourth ranked Ventura. The Pirates are 10-4 on the season coming off of an 83-47 blowout win over Moorpark. The two will face off at Cypress at 7:00 pm on Saturday.
