Team Effort Earns Cypress First Conference Win

Cypress, Calif. – After facing two ranked opponents to start conference, Cypress saw their opportunity hosting unranked Golden West. The Chargers started slow but picked up the pace building their lead until earning the eventual 92-59 win. Five Chargers scored in double digits including freshman point guard Michelle Salemi who put together a complete game for 13 points, six assists, and seven steals.
The Chargers and the Rustlers battled back and forth for the first nine minutes until Cypress took the lead for good with a three-point bucket by freshman guard Kejera Jolly. Cypress worked on stretching the lead from there to as much as a 16 point lead in the first half. Golden West pushed back towards the end of the half as Cypress finished the half with a 41-30 lead. The Chargers pushed ahead in the second half for the eventual 33 point lead.
Freshman guard Candyce Carlberg led Cypress in scoring with 15 points along with three steals and five rebounds. Three Chargers scored 13 points including Salemi, Jolly, and freshman guard Marissa Main. Jolly and Main also combined for 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Nyesha Green came off the bench to score a season high ten points. Sophomore forward Letisha Batiste grabbed 11 rebounds while freshman guard Sequana Norris contributed in almost every category with nine points, seven steals, five assists and four rebounds.
Cypress improves to 5-13 and gets their first conference win improving to 1-2 in conference. The Chargers return to ranked competition Friday as they travel to face 11th ranked Saddleback. The Gauchos are 15-4 and 2-1 in conference coming off of a 15 point win over Santa Ana. The two will face off Friday at 7:30 pm at Saddleback.
