Chargers Betrayed by Final Three Minutes

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress was hoping for a second straight conference upset Wednesday night facing the 13th ranked Lasers of Irvine Valley. Cypress proved their mettle battling back and forth against the Lasers but slipped behind in the final three minutes losing 64-55. Freshman guard Sequana Norris led the Chargers with 14 points, three assists, and three steals.

The two teams exchanged blows in the first half with Cypress finishing with a slight advantage 29-27. IVC came out in the second half fighting gaining an eight point lead with five minutes remaining in the game. Cypress would not give in going on a ten point run capped off by a three-pointer by freshman guard Candyce Carlberg to give the Chargers a two point edge with three minutes left to go. The Lasers hit back with a jumper followed by a steal, a three-pointer, and another jumper to take the five point lead and force Cypress to foul. Cypress was unable to catch IVC from there eventually falling by nine.

Sophomore forward Saw-Ann Bryan added ten points and seven rebounds on the night while fellow sophomore forward Letisha Batiste grabbed a game high 13 rebounds along with nine points. Freshmen guards Candyce Carlberg and Ana Astrologo combined for 12 points.

Cypress falls to 6-14 and 2-3 in conference. The Chargers will host cross-town rival Fullerton Friday. The Hornets are 13-11 and 3-2 in conference coming off of a narrow 80-79 loss to Santa Ana. The two meet up Friday at 7:30 pm at Cypress.
