Cypress, Calif. – The Chargers faced another formidable opponent Friday night hosting perennial rivals Fullerton College. The seventh ranked, second place Hornets held off the home Chargers as Cypress lost 75-68. Freshman guard Ana Astrologo came off the bench to score a career high 11 points while adding three assists and no turnovers in just 15 minutes of play.
Cypress slipped to start the game giving up ten straight Hornet points unable to answer until the 15:42 mark with a layup by freshman guard Candyce Carlberg. Down by 11 a few minutes later, the Chargers turned it on going on a 13-2 run capped off by a three-point bucket by Astrologo for Cypress’s first and only tie. Fullerton turned it back on taking back their eleven point lead that Cypress eventually shrank down to six, 37-31 to end the first half. The Chargers kept battling uphill in the second half. Down by as much as 14, Cypress went on a 12-1 run to close to within three. The two continued to play the back and forth game until time ran out on the Chargers losing by seven.
Freshman point guard Michelle Salemi equaled the team high with 11 points including three three-pointers. Freshman guard Sequana Norris added ten points, four steals, three assists, and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Saw-Ann Bryan was the final Charger in double-digits with 10 points.
Cypress falls to 6-15 and 2-4 in conference. They will host the Tigers of Riverside next. Riverside is 9-13 and 2-3 in conference. The two will face off to close the first half of conference Wednesday at 7:30 pm at Cypress.
