Free-Throws Fatal in Thriller against Riverside

Cypress, Calif. – Cypress and Riverside have had some barn burners over the past few seasons and Wednesday night proved to be another one for the books as the teams combined for 159 points. The two battled back and forth but Cypress could not convert at the line falling 82-77. Freshman guard Candyce Carlberg paced Cypress with 16 points, five assists, and six rebounds.
The first half went back and forth with five lead changes. Riverside took the momentum towards the end of the half with the 39-31 lead at half. The Tigers held the lead in the second half until Cypress turned on the gas at the 13 minute mark with a 13 point run sparked by two straight steals and layups by freshman guard Sequana Norris. The six point Charger lead slipped away with nine straight Tiger points. Riverside continued to stretch their lead while Cypress continued to miss free-throws. The Chargers missed 18 of their 37 free-throws. With 50 seconds remaining in the game and Riverside up by nine, the Chargers would not give in. Freshman point guard Michelle Salemi hit a three-pointer cutting the lead to six. Cypress continued to foul, force turnovers, and miss free-throws as time ran out.
Norris led Cypress with 17 points and three steals. Sophomore forward Saw-Ann Bryan went five-for-five from the field for 12 points while grabbing seven rebounds.
Cypress falls to 6-16 and 2-5 in conference. They move on to the second round of Orange Empire Conference play Friday with a rematch against Santa Ana. The last time they met, Santa Ana won 75-48. The two face off again Friday at Santa Ana at 5:30 pm.
