Cypress Women’s Basketball Wins Championship and Conference Accolades

Cypress, Calif. - Friday night, the Cypress College Lady Chargers clenched their first Orange Empire Conference championship since 1988 with a win over Santa Ana. This is head Coach Margaret Mohr’s first conference championship in her eight year career at Cypress after taking her team all the way last season to a State Championship. Mohr also earned this year’s conference’s Coach of the Year award after leading a freshman rich team to the championship. Sophomore Ana Fakatou, a Long Beach Wilson graduate, was voted the conference MVP after averaging 17.6 points per game and 7.6 rebounds. This is Fakatou’s second straight conference MVP award and has committed early to Nebraska University.
Cypress had two more players make the all-conference team including Long Beach Poly graduate Brae Butler. The freshman starter averaged 11.8 points per game and led the team in steals with 40. Freshman starting point guard Corianne Felix of Savanna high school also made all conference averaging 8.6 points and 4.6 assists per game.
Cypress finished their regular season 26-5 and is looking forward to next week where they will begin their quest to defend their state championship in playoffs. The Chargers will play Friday night at 7:00 at home against El Camino College.
